“We’ve Been Doing This For How Long?” Your 10th Anniversary Commemorative Open Thread

A little birdie on the street (okay, it was Rikki) confirmed that today was the 10th anniversary of the site. So, with that, I’m kicking off our 10th anniversary celebration period, a several-ish week period that spans from now through the Great Migration (aka The Day the Dick Jokes Died, which I thought was June 30th but is actually July 31st, I was off by a month).

(I theoretically have no power in this, as I hold no standing in DFO Corp. but with the power vested in me when they bumped me up to Admin from Editor I’m gonna just decree it, because as we all know that’s apparently how shit works nowadays.)

A quick check of the search function tells me it’s not 100% accurate, on account of the first post from our beloved Internet Dad dating back to March 11th, 2015. It even says it’s a place for your dick jokes! (Or duck jokes according to autocorrect.) However, the first post that welcomed the beginning of the migration is, as a matter of fact, from 10 years ago today, which is I assume what we are counting from, with everything else being our proverbial BC (or BCE if you’re a stickler).

I was supposed to have a list of 10 articles I enjoyed or was proud of, but I’ve been working like a dog and I’m sure the outset of World War III is going to make me even busier until we all inevitably perish, so I’m going to take this time to  talk about some of those articles I’m proudest of and give some personal thank yous. By my estimate my first post would have been sometime around April, May, or possibly even Maypril 2016, so I’m not quite here for my 10 but it’s pretty close.

First off, thank you to our Internet Dad, Darkest Timeline Zack Morris. I‘ve never built a website, so I have no idea what it takes to keep this site running. But he’s managed to do so here for the last 10+ years which has been what I can best surmise as figuring out shit in WordPress, which off and on decides to do the most random shit. Sometimes things just decide they don’t want to work that day and he’s on it, which I can also imagine is tricky due to, you know, the real, non-webmaster jobs that we all have in non-dick joke land.

Thank you to the writers of Kissing Suzy Kolber. I’m sure we would all say that as they may have from Deadspin, that where we’ve gotten to has been from standing on the shoulders of giants. We don’t come together without all of you. Thank you specifically to Dave, who with his comic keeps the light on in some extent. I’ll admit I haven’t been keeping up to the extent I could, but it’s good to see The Draw Play is still running strong, and with RobotsFightingDinosaurs back in the pod!

Of the crew, shout out to Matt, for agreeing to have me interview. I probably could have edited it better so I’m sorry about that, and I still owe you a proper drink and an email the next time I’m soloing somewhere.

To Andre aka Dracophile, for inspiring me to write the BattleBots Beat as a slightly toned down version of BattleBots Update but in my own voice. BBU may be finished but it was the first and remains the best.

To Nomonkeyfun, Brocky, The Maestro (and Lady Maestro), and Sharkbait: I’ve actually had the chance to meet you in person, break bread or hot sauce, or trade Pokemon. It’s been a pleasure crossing paths without the mask of dick jokery on, and I have to say we’re as charming rogues in meatspace as we are in cyberspace.

To theeWeeBabySeamus, we miss you. Wherever you are. You’d love Senorita Weaselo, and I’ll admit you’d be a little proud of me of her. Even though she isn’t a barista anywhere. In death you did actually make me start on the Requiem, though I wish that it wasn’t the reason.

Lastly, of course, to all of you. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege so far the last 10 years, and may it continue to be for many more.

No sports tonight (except maybe the Mundialito, if my drive up the NJ Turnpike hinted at anything), so… enjoy yourselves and each other!
