We are down to the last quarterfinal game of the week. Earlier, France beat Morocco, Spain beat Belgium, and Norway played England this morning. Let’s talk about the first two semifinalists:
FRANCE
The Frenchies beat Morocco handily and look really good. It’s really a shame that France will meet Spain in one semi-final because those two seem to be the best two teams in the world.
They will meet on Tuesday at High Noon Pacific Time. I will NOT be at work that day. I just hope I’m back from the golf course by kickoff.
ESPAÑA
Los Españoles le ganaron a Bélgica 2 a 1 en El Leí. They are doing it with some unexpected names. Mikel Merino has been the hero of the last two games and he’s a sub.
The Telemundo announcer for the Belgium game noted that all of the coach’s moves are paying off and this is true. Every sub coming on has had an impact on the game. If they can keep playing as a complete team of more than 11 players, they have the best shot of anyone in this tourney of beating France.
OTHER MUNDIAL STUFF
Argentina has benefitted from the easiest path to the quarterfinals I’ve ever seen and yet it’s taken some Messi Magic to avoid catastrophe. You’ve got to figure that runs out at some point, doesn’t it?
Unfortunately, tonight’s opponent is Switzerland which, while perfectly cromulent, does not create fear in the eyes of anyone. Can they beat Argentina? Well, plenty of lesser teams have come close, but close only counts in horseshoes and grenades. News and notes:
- Mexico’s Javier Aguirre has handed the reins of the Mexican team to Rafael Marquez. That was the arrangement prior to the tourney and nothing has changed. He will probably now go back to manage in Spain.
- There is still uncertainty over whether Mauricio Pochettino will return as US coach.
- Portugal’s coach is gone
- Croatia’s coach is gone
- Czechia’s coach is gone
- Ghana’s coach is gone
This evenings game:
ARGENTINA V SWITZERLAND at the Chiefs’ Stadium
It’s appropriate that this game is being played at the Chiefs’ stadium because the latest FIFA Conspiracy Theory says that the refs are giving Messi and the Messiettes the Patrick Mahomes treatment. I wonder if he was invited to the wedding? I touch myself too much, so Tina will probably win after stinking up the joint.
