SWING SHIFT DISK JOCKEY: …and closing things out with “Crimson and Clover” by Tommy James and the Shondells. That’s it for me for today, folks. We’ve got a special treat coming up in the next hour, Super Bowl, um, participant Cam Newton will be taking over to take your requests and give your favorite songs a spin. You want to say hello and lead us into the break, Cam?
CAM NEWTON: We’ll be back.
Cut to commercial break. When the “ON AIR” light comes on, Cam sits silently, scowling.
PRODUCER: (through earpiece) Cam, you want to say something? Maybe introduce yourself, say hello to all the listeners out there?
CAM: Nope.
PRODUCER: All right, all right, that’s fine. Maybe we just open up with some music, we’ve got Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” all queued up, just hit the button to get it started.
CAM: [sits with his arms folded and does nothing]
PRODUCER: What’s the matter? Go ahead, give it a spin, our listeners love it.
CAM: [shakes head]
PRODUCER: Aw, come on, Cam. It’s a great song! You don’t like it?
CAM: Got outplayed, bro.
PRODUCER: Well, listen, maybe you can call up something from the Starland Vocal Band, or something out of John Denver’s catalogue…
CAM: Denver didn’t do anything special.
PRODUCER: Okay, but we’ve got some serious dead air here. We’ve gotta get something rolling.
CAM: I don’t know what you want me to say.
PRODUCER: Well, you like music, don’t you?
CAM: [nods, almost imperceptibly]
PRODUCER: So the theme for today’s show is “Songs about Leaving”. Just pick something along those lines and play it.
CAM: Naw, man, I don’t think so. I’m done. [removes headphones and leaves studio]

Welcome to 2016’s first edition of Request Line! Today’s theme, as mentioned, is “Songs about Leaving”. Pick your favorites and post a youtube link (or better yet, embed the video) in the comments. Over the weekend I’ll compile things into a playlist and be back on Monday with DFO Radio. I’ll get you started with a classic by Rush. Have a great weekend everybody!

Fuck it – it’s Leaving on a Jet Plane by Me First
Good Goes The Bye
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFBPwkO9Bt8
Request to our most beloved benefactor who runs this site – or maybe it can be answered by DFOers who are smarter than me:
How in FUCK do you post a link to YouTube so that the actual video appears, versus just the URL address?
I believe you gots to have special permissions, like write permissions on the site itself, to embed links to videos.
I too had this problem.
Select the video and right underneath the red “subscribe” button there is a “share” button, press that then press on the “embed” option, copy the link that pops up and paste into comment.
Vie-ola.
Second Try:
Didn’t see this one yet:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68X8o0S7vJc
Staind – Outside. Complete departure from their actual first album and then their second “First” album when they got signed but I like it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSo0_vmcT4Q
When they played the local music festival, the crowd only wanted this type of music, and they basically spent a half hour screaming at everyone present and said they were never coming back to Bethlehem.
I always kind of respected that.
If you walk away now, you’re gonna start a war:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1UwnMJ-5KE
If you’ve talked to me about music for more than 5 minutes, you’re probably familiar with my love of Authority Zero. This particular song was written in memory of Tony Sly of “No Use for a Name” who passed in his sleep at age 41 in 2012.
Nice stuff, listening to them now on Spotify.
Girl From The North Country (SoA version):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Z3QDBsQTsQ
Shit, I love Lions, and I never knew this song was available outside the show. Gotta find that SoA soundtrack somewhere…
I’ve made no secret about how much I love this band right here:
Tenacious D – Fuck You Gently
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goh0xpmNMLY
The Buzzcocks haven’t made an appearance? Tut. TUT.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-EEPvXlTUnU
you can NEVAR go wrong with the Buzzcocks.
NO ONE DENIES THIS
Yep yep. They’re magnificent.
Sometimes when you leave, you gotta hitch a ride.
https://youtu.be/Xp4Ugebi608
Time to pick up the tempo a bit:
Scrolled down a bit and saw someone mention Led Zeppelin. One of my faves from them
Led Zeppelin – Thank You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1z4vkPWkLQ
I was a bit melodramatic about worrying about dying from not eating last night, figured I should check in as still alive
My request is some Johnny Cash because he was mentioned 3 hours ago in another thread and this song has been in and out of my head since then
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OVHnWyDmdw
Another throw back. Because I’m old you see.
This guy’s voice is haunting, plus the song reminds me of a buddy who had to end a summer romance with this heartbreakingly awesome, but clinically insane, waitress.
Because I’m dumb:
https://youtu.be/s8rR7E6NfY4
Dude, excellent call. That was going to be the next thing I posted after I get done ripping my own heart out with that Song for Zula thing Hippo posted downthread.
For anyone who has seen The Wire:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q97IfBOIR5Q
Getting in the way back machine, got to love the voice:
I worked with Roy Orbison’s step-brother for a while out in AZ. It was the most random thing ever, guy just drops that Roy is family one night while we’re drinking.
If you haven’t heard of Airborune from various video game soundtracks (Madden and Guitar Hero) they sound like a lot like a modern AC/DC. I thought their newest album was particularly terrible, but the first 3 were pretty damn solid. Here’s the title track from one of those:
The Fratellis: rancor never sounded so rockin’
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nO6e2xvOLs
Bonus gutter talk: “I’m a cynical cunt, and I’m much too lazy to change”
-The Fratellis, “Look Out Sunshine!”
This is the song my best friend played at the funeral of his brother in law, and then we played it again the entire way to my friend’s funeral:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AOp9c5DRzc
That is a great fucking song.
Love Flogging Molly (the band and the activity).
I gather speed from you fuckin with me:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6lCVgE6xnM
And in a reversal of course: Bill Withers: ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIdIqbv7SPo
I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know I know
Etc.
This is the tidy 2:09 running time, TV talk show version. He cuts down the”I know”s by about 75%.
Bill Withers is awesome. Especially the part where he just bailed on show business because he felt like it.
Yeah, I think I turned this into awesome post-break up music. So I’m going to leave this to you all and get back to work…leaving you with this gem:
The life-affirming part about leaving: scorn, hatred… You know,
Farewell, have a good one
May car run over you
May lightning break you
May a train flatten you
Farewell, have a good one
May a dog bite you
May the Devil take you
Go get skull marked.
You are not a person
You are but a savage
And I want you to death
Dead is hooooooooow… I want you.

Teh Canadia Band, Great Lake Swimmers, Stealing Tomorrow:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GvdQG46vkc
“Moving Pictures, Silent Films” of theirs is one of my favorite songs ever.
Not sure if it’s leaving themed exactly, but definitely depressing traveling music….
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3khH9ih2XJg
Just for Hippo, bcuz I know how much loves teh country…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40243qK6RCo
And then of course, there’s the goddamn Cure:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8UR2TFUp8w
This would be a solid funeral song.
How depressing are we allowed to get? I think I need to move on to more uplifting leaving songs after this one:
After this:
That song is perfect. “You can keep the dime”–damn.
As always, Jim James could sing the phone book and make it purty:
Try #2
Fuck it. YouTube link it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIs-UA1M7q8
Poke, Frightened Rabbit:
Why won’t our love keel over
As it chokes on a bone?
And we can mourn its passing and then bury it in snow
Or should we kick its cunt in
And watch as it dies from bleeding?
If you don’t want to be with me just say and I will go
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXLacIfo-6k
I think Nine Lives is an underrated Aerosmith album, ergo:
Fastball – The Way
(screw you embed demons)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0wfu3tOrtQ
Nobody put it as succinctly as Harry Nilsson:
Also, Fly By Night is an awesome song/album according to Krieger’s van.
Sure, it’s a little on the nose, but just try to hit Peter Cetera’s notes. I dare you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlKaVFqxERk
I always liked this band.
What the fucking fuck?
the dark YouTube arts is mysterious muthafuckas
They were quite the cunning linguists.
They had that song about not falling in love with strippers, which is common sense, really. But we live in a country where you have to be told not to eat silica packing materials.
“Fee Waybill” is an all-timer of a name.
This sin’t the best song and may be a bit too on the nose but I found a groovy 1974 live version of Eagles : Already Gone.
Suck it embed … fuck!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRQ1qkGxoR0
Inorite????
I thought I learned a lot about embedding from having the ELITE three magic shells on the old site but this is kicking my ass. I mean come on, YouTube has the embed code RIGHT THERE and I can’t make it work!
And THIS is the best song about being LEFT, aka the heartbreak that never heals, or even starts to scab over a little. Watch when Matthew Houck gets to around the 3:15 mark, you can see his heart is breaking all over again just singing the song (for probably like the 500th time):
Jesus Christ, man. That’s fucking heartrending.
yup, I have a woman that fits that bill for me. The only way I got through the first couple of months was listening to this over and over and over again. It at least put words to the feeling I couldn’t describe.
Bastards….you lured me in AGAIN!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eocCPDxKq1o
Let me get that for you, friendo
Ha ha! Now Low Commander has the power!
Much obliged.
Tell your god to ready for blood.
It IS a BLOOD FOAR THE BLOOD GODS kinda weekend, is it not??
Not even gonna attempt the embed, embarrass myself, and give WCS the satisfaction yet again.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4csScc1wLs0
I am not a woman, but as always the beautiful Chan Marshall says it best:
Embed still doesn’t work for me and a lot of other Commentsists out there. Any help from our Embedding Overlords would be appreciated.
Rise Against – This is Letting Go:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsI9l6yyXuU
I don’t know exactly why, but this song always reminds me of Junior’s passing.
Edit: Hey, it works now! What a country!
Your embedding seems to be working now, for what it’s worth.
Shit…now I gotta try it.
Damn you.
Songs about leaving, huh? Well this is always my go-to. An all-time classic.
