Evenin’, y’all. Mom’s on her plane, so it’s back atcha with the north-of-the-border open thread topics.
NFL News:
- Arian Foster landed in Miami. It’s reportedly a one-year deal worth $1.5 million with $2 million in incentives.
- Justin Durant landed in Dallas, thanks to Rolando McLain’s suspension. Even though it’s most likely a minimum deal with incentives, it’s still one more year towards pension eligibility.
- The Bills are reportedly talking to Reggie Bush. Given Karlos Williams’ suspension, it makes sense to have a solid veteran on staff, and is a much more plausibe excuse that simply signing him so Rex could ask about Kim’s feet.
- A fairly long piece on Matt Forte talks about a lot of things. What I find fascinating is that, even now, he stands by Jay Cutler.
- Eddie Lacy has had to go back on the P90X just before training camp opens. My question is, Is he taking weight off to make the team, or making room for his Green Bay diet?
- Charles Tillman retired today after 13 seasons. He will probably get some votes for a gold jacket.
It happened during my time off, but I’d like to think that John Elway tricked Pat Bowlen into saying, “This one’s for Von!”
Finally, not football related, but definitely geared towards the Patriots, St. Louis Cardinals former scouting director Chris Correa was sentenced to 46 months federal time in Houston for accessing the Astros computer network while working for the Cardinals. It would only be a better story if it happened to the Yankees or Red Sox. Florio chooses this instance to remind his loyal “readers” that the NFL has warned teams and employees to never, never do this, because it might result in more federal scrutiny of League practices. And we all know how Rog treats people who bring The Shield into disrepute.
There’s no sports of note tonight. Mets vs Cubs is the national game on ESPN. There’s only the Republican Convention, and all the earnest ridiculousness that goes along with it. There has already been one attempt to free delegates to vote freely, but that was suppressed. Procedural arguing – the hallmark of the Republican Party!
And such presences. Live broadcasts! Colbert + Jon Stewart! The Daily Show all four days! If you want the mud, Gawker has you covered. Their story on “Bikers for Trump” has a decidely ‘Altamont meets The Factory’ flavour to it.
I enjoy the fact that the police are so spooked, they actually asked the Governor (who, remember, was once a candidate for this fiasco) to suspend the state’s “open carry” laws. But tennis balls have been banned, so the WTA won’t be able to attend.
A sideshow I’m watching – what will Fox promote? They haven’t been totally pro-Trump, but with Roger Ailes reportedly on his way out, how will that tint the coverage? So much drama.
Yessir – it promises to be a fun five days.
Unfiltered fear mongering right here, folks
As someone who speaks in public for a living I feel qualified to say that Joni Ernst is really bad at it.
When I speak in public I imagine every naked.
That’s why I stopped proselytizing in Wal-Mart.
Oh good, here’s the woman who’s claim to fame is cutting the balls off pigs.
You know, we’re having our dog fixed tomorrow, and you don’t see me running for office.

I’d love to see Trump make Ted Nugent Secretary of the VA just so that fucker would have to face veterans every day and tell them about how he shat himself to get out of the draft.
I’d love to see Ted Nugent fired out of a cannon into the sun.
That’s too quick

You can say the same about Obama.
Or Clinton.
Or Mark Chmura

I just want to say: If this was 1816 and duels were still commonplace, with the way both Hillary and Trump have pissed people off, odds are we wouldn’t be in the mess!
Also cannonballs.
Yeah, but Cruz would be the nominee because he’s a stone cold fucking serial killer.
Oh look, Marlins Man is on Baseball Tonight.
Let’s give some dull fucking rich guy who can throw around money TV time to be fucking dull and uninteresting.
You just described like … All of television.
The RNC really should’ve known better than to hold the convention in the Factory.
Hey, don’t drag Cleveland into this!
Federalist Party (1789-1815): Cause of Death: Trying to negotiate a separate peace with England in War of 1812.
Democratic-Republican Party (1789-1828): Cause of Death: Proof that if a political party is the only party, they will oppose themselves because its the only thing they know how to do.
Whig Party (1832-1854): Cause of Death: Earliest proof that race relations have been separating this nation since the Antebellum.
Populist Party (1912-1916): Theodore Roosevelt didn’t feel like running for President in 1916.
Republican Party (1856-2016): TRUMP!
Conservative Party (2018-2020): CRUZ!
Democratic Party (1828-2024): HILLARY! (Oh, come on. You know its gonna happen.)
National Basic Income like what they’re apparently trying in one of the Swiss cantons is one of the final steps of socialism before communism in the highly condensed version of Kapital, but what I am wondering isn’t inflationary fears directly, but that it’ll serve as a means of making some things more expensive like how federal student aid has subsidized the massive inflation of college tuition. So I guess it is inflation concerns.
Dude — you can’t expect me to watch a Trump video on youtube and then understand all these big words all of a sudden.
Quick back of the napkin math is all you need to do to figure out this isn’t happening in a large country any time soon.
*Diverse Country
Oh, right. Sorry, I got distracted and posted that before I was done thinking.
So late-capitalist America would exploit the Hell out of the basic income in the same way as it has every time the minimum wage has increased. The problem is never inflation in the end, it’s that unemployment increases.
What’s my point. I can’t remember anymore. Also, if people are dropping out of the employment picture altogether (which is argued as to how unemployment is as low as it is), then how are people getting by? Do they just “get by” as it were? America’s underground economy isn’t known for its need for disposable office workers.

But don’t you want to get off?
I’ll just leave this here…and probably extol you all to read it when I’m finishing yesterday’s growler of sour beer:
http://www.vox.com/2016/7/18/12210500/diagnosed-dysfunction-republican-party
Its like Republicans are putting together a clinic in how not to win an election. They elect a totally unlikeable candidate. Have him alienate all groups of people you are weak at and your opponent is strong at. Completely mock popular people in your party so you won’t get their donor’s bank accounts. And you shut down all in party dissenters in the most obvious way.
The Democrats could nominate the pair of Benedict Arnold and John Wilkes Booth and Arnold-Booth would still beat Trump by 10 points.
I hope so.
Yep.
I’m still gonna vote Trump though. I think it’s funny.
I don’t want to vote for Hillary, and I’m sure plenty of people will check that straight ticket Dem box, but Portland really is Bernie country. I can see a lot of people no voting or voting for someone else — Stein or Trump, mainly — that I may have to vote for her just to be sure.
As long as you call the Bernie-to-Trump folks intellectually bankrupt shitheads, I’m good.
That’s being kind to those fucking idiots.
I’m no fan of Secretary Clinton…honestly, she would be very vulnerable to a strong GOP candidate…but holy crap! The thought of Trump as president is so fucking chilling that I’m gonna drink vodka & vote for her nonetheless.
I mean, I was gonna drink anyway, but this gives me an excuse.
Portland is Titans Country, if I recall the maps correctly.
Titans. Is that some kind of sports team?
Are you sure you don’t mean Timbers?
Lots of comic book stores in Portland.
Oh, right. I forgot.
I mean.

“The Democrats could nominate the pair of Benedict Arnold and John Wilkes Booth and Arnold-Booth would still beat Trump by 10 points.”
But instead they nominated Clinton and will be lucky to win by 4.
Is Rudy trying to be Oprah?
nomonkeyfun’s comment in the previous thread about the confederate with the upside-down American flags on his hillbilly-mobile near the WTC reminded me that most people probably don’t know the significance of an upside-down flag.
The flag, when flown upside-down, is a symbol (as recognized in Title 4, the Flag Code) of “dire distress,” i.e. extreme danger to life or property. Right-wingers have since taken the occasion to signal the country is under dire distress. Because of the gays and Obama and so forth.
Hey now. You’re not the only one who saw the Last Castle.
Never saw that.
Keep it that way and thank me later.

Not watching the convention. Just saw a few photos of people coming/going/speaking and all I have to say is, shit, when Chris Christie sits around the Quicken Loans Arena he really sits AROUND the Quicken Loans Arena!
I know I’ve posted this many times, but this is about right for this convention.

Just to remind everyone, Freddie Grey’s spine was 80% severed. The cops he is talking about got off on what could best be looked at as a fucking technicality and the whole “Rough Ride” shit is a common thing Baltimore cops do.
You ever wonder why the “Stop Snitching” movement started in Baltimore, it was because the cops routinely sold out witnesses to the highest bidder. Pretty much cooperating with the cops against a drug gang is a death sentence because for a little as $500, a gang can pay off a cop for an active police report.
Literally anything punitive would have been a miracle. Especially insulting that they were getting off the hook as the protests were ramping up
The fact that there were even trials was a massive improvement over the usual shit. I just get incensed when mother fuckers act like black people are animals because they don’t bend over backward for the police. None of the cops live in the city. Not a single fucking one. Pretty much if you get caught with drugs, inside of the 6-95 beltway, you are getting slammed HARD. get caught with the same exact shit outside of the beltway, you are getting released. Its because the suburbanites have access to money and lawyers. Cops aren’t stupid. Its easy convictions.
Never mind the fucking fact that the suburbanites feed the fucking drug trade in the city. Fuck, I mean smack is basically a white person drug at this point. The suburbanites just let their kids come into the city, flood the streets with guns and money, and they just turn their noses at the violence and the devastation as its a black thing.
If the state of MD gave a shit about ending the drug violence in the city, they would fucking stop every single SUV with white people going in and out of the neighborhoods. But oh lordy…that would be profiling…
Plus it would suppress GOP turnout

I could watch this all day. I especially love how they all seem so irritated by the kickback, like it’s the guns fault. And all the loaded gun dropping. And all the people watching who presumably know how to hold a gun and should have told them but instead are holding the camera. And all the boob grabbing.
Just got off the phone with a recruiter for a new yob, which is starting to sound pretty damn good.
It’s almost like drinking a beer while watching basedball in the background makes me more comfortable or something.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wnaMOYuGy-E/Uwzle5EPBPI/AAAAAAAAAUo/_xZxP9pk2zM/s1600/smell-the-weird.gif
I want a new yob. Who is this yob recruiter you’re working with? Are the yobs freely available? Or are they exclusive yobs?
And what the hell is a yob?
http://media0.giphy.com/media/27AqY6jmNU8ve/giphy.gif
Oh.
Well if that’s a yob…well, no I don’t want that.
No way; I KNOW you want to beat the holy milk out of some cow.
I just got my new job via a recruiter. I was nervous about the whole experience since I wasn’t sure I could trust someone else to connect me a job in my best interest, but lo and behold, it happened.
http://awesomegifs.com/wp-content/uploads/things-had-gotten-weird.gif
I’ve been through about 6 of them so far during this process, and unless they instantly consider you a top prospect, you get nothing out of them, ever.
The last one I worked with sent me an email saying he would send me all this information the next day. I emailed him after 2, and never got a response. After a week, I responded with just “…really?” and got a bullshit excuse within a minute, then never heard back, so my expectations have been quite low.
Ouch.
was online or local?
for I am too, in the market for new job, and I am looking in the greater chicago area
The recruiter I used specialized in data analysis jobs. It was a recommendation of a former boss. Their focus is pretty narrow so unless you have those specific skills, they won’t be able to help you.
Online. I basically applied for a position and turned out to be through a recruiter rather than directly with the company, which worries me a little about their HR capacity.
outsourcing doesn’t happen just overseas.
but yeah, I’ve got to do something different, so i’ve been thinking of recruiters.
It’s worth trying, but I wouldn’t put all your eggs in that basket by any means. You’re still gonna have to go hunting, but it’s a nice supplement to actively looking.
Holy shit the band is playing My Sharona.

I think the one thing about this election that isn’t talked about is what troubles me the most. We have basically no young future leaders for either party.
Clinton, 68.
Trump, 70.
Sanders, 74
Kaisch, 64
Sure, you point out Cruz and Rubio are in their 40’s, but no one follows Cruz and Rubio is ambitious right up the point where it involves him doing actual work. And all the leftists pining for Warren somehow don’t realize she’s 67.
There’s a massive leadership vacuum in the major parties of this country, especially for the Democrats who seem to have no one waiting in the wings. Unless someone steps up in the next few years, we’ll probably look at more elections filled with retirement-age Boomer retreads who won’t be around longer enough to see the world they’re tasked with building now.
Looking ahead eight years, but don’t sleep on Chris Murphy.
Alan Grayson (FL) will likely be an up-and-comer, as will Tulsi Gabbard (HI).
Grayson will be 66 in 2024, so I don’t know how up-and-coming he is. He pretty much has to win his Senate race to be in the conversation.
Gabbard is an interesting name and would still be quite young in presidential terms in 2024.
With Grayson I’m thinking Senate leadership (assuming he wins) rather than a presidential run.
http://www.teamjimmyjoe.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/dumbass.gif
Even as younger conservatives become more socially liberal, their economic policies become more horrific. I’m terrified to see what they unleash on the world.
As for democrats, yeah. They really need another 2004 Obama moment
I think Elizabeth Warren would make for a great…SON OF A BITCH just looked her up and she is 67.
Just gonna put it out there…
http://today.law.harvard.edu/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/HLB-June10-10177.jpg
She is a bangable 67…
She easily looks 15 years younger than she is which is probably why people earmark her for a run in 2024.
I honest to god, though she was in her low 50’s.
Just think; in two years…..
She’s 67?! In what Maritain years?
No one of talent wants to run for office anymore. I went to a college prep school with a shit ton of hyper-ambitious overachievers who became lawyers and Wall Street assholes. I don’t a single one who’s run for any type of office.
And the ones who do want to…
