Your “Is There Always Something To Watch?” Tuesday Evening Open Thread

NFL Nuggets:

  • Bears linebacker Roquan Smith has got an apparent case of the Everson Griffen’s and is out indefinitely.
    • He was taken off the roster 20 minutes before kickoff last Sunday, and is not expected to travel with the Bears to London to play against the Raiders.
  • Smith’s absence might not matter, as Khalil Mack has had this game circled on his calendar since the schedule came out.
    • “I’ve been looking forward to it. This is one I’ve been looking forward to. I can’t lie to you, man; I’ve got to let you know how it is. It’s going to be a big one.”
Author’s interpretation.
  • He might be gone but the union’s not forgotten: The NFLPA is considering grievance options concerning Antonio Brown.
    • Brown believes he is owed nearly $64 million:
      • His overall potential Raiders salary of $54 million, including the $30 million in guaranteed money, and
      • $10 million from the Patriots.
    • He is poised to file up to nine grievances.
    • Let’s see how the back-to-school program is going:

Looking good there, Ace.

——————————————————–

Say – can I ruin two memories for you?

Thanks. Well then,

Bill Belichick won his first game with the Patriots. After starting his tenure 0-4, on October 1, 2000 – the Patriots beat the Broncos 28-19 behind four Drew Bledsoe touchdowns that Tom Brady watched from the bench. The Patiots finished 5-11 that season, and have been barely able to turn things around in the years since, only managing 16 division titles and six Super Bowl victories. And to think,

As Gratliff knows, this week is a pretty big week for professional wrestling. The debut of Cody Rhodes’ & Shad Khan’s AEW – All Elite Wrestling – is Wednesday night. Unlike other second-tier wrestling promotions (Impact; ROH), AEW is coming out of the gate with a major network deal – TNT & TSN – and a two-hour prime-time block: Wednesday Night Dynamite.

They promise a new way of presenting “professional wrestling”, as opposed to the “sports entertainment” that the WWE has been providing since it won control of the marketplace. AEW has enough of the old – Cody Rhodes, Chris Jericho, the Young Bucks – to draw in the curious, and the promise of fresh faces or revitalized personas – Kenny Omega, Jon Moxley, their entire women’s division – that is will be able to deliver on the promise of fresh rivalries and “a different product”.

To counter that, they have the usual product on Monday Night Raw (which last night was a wet fart & advertising for AEW). Surprisingly, Vince McMahon has risked taking his niche brand NXT off of the subscription network and put it up against AEW on Wednesday nights, using its partnership with USA to try and get eyes away from the other product. They also have a big premiere this week, with Smackdown moving to FOX on Friday nights, and the first show has “The Return of The Rock” plus Brock Lesnar’s first TV match in 15 years.

Return, the Monday Night Wars have. Starting next week there will be 11 hours of wrestling available across three/two (USA / Canada) networks. How long it lasts I don’t know. But for as long as it does, we live in a new golden age of wrestling on TV.

Tonight’s sports:

  • MLB:
    • NL Wildcard playoff: Brewers at Nationals – 8:00PM | TBS / Sportsnet
  • WNBA Playoff:
    • Game 2: Connecticut Sun at Washington Mystics – 8:00PM | ESPN / TSN2
  • 2019 Rugby World Cup:

    • New Zealand vs. Canada – 6:15AM | NBCSN / TSN

Don’t forget – hockey season starts tomorrow.

So, I go around the to the left?

Unsurprised

To the back. We’re sinister here.

yeah right

Jesus!

yeah right

Hey folks!

It’s a rare special edition Friday night mid week style!

Going to the Hollywood Bowl tomorrow – Vampire Weekend – and took the day off afterwards for recovery!

Plus we’re taking the shuttle bus from fucking Torrance to The Bowl and I need to factor in some insanity because of that as well.

Yee-haw! Another fucking bus ride!

But this one allows you to drink. DRINK like alcohol and there’s a convenient pisser in the back.

Beats the shit out of taking a Metro bus through South LA.

Unsurprised

One one hand, my jealousy is all:

On the other, my adult side thinks this is awesome and I’m still envious.

Might have to Boots on The Ground this shit.

You should boots on the ground this!

Blax here.
Two old ladies bought me my drinks at the hotel bar this evening. Think it’s cuz I was in the army. Now I am having some take out green chili burger/dog/fries.

yeah right

In Vegas, Mr. Blax?

Unsurprised

I miss being able to get green chile on everything.

yeah right

You still can. In it’s pristine state green chile can be as healthy as any dish on the planet.

yeah right

Alright Class, pop quiz.

Name the chilies and vegetable items pictured, starting upper left going clockwise.

This is a timed test and it will affect your final grade.

Time. Starts…Now.

Mr. Ayo

Peppers, tomatoes, peppers, peppers.

yeah right

Tomatoes?

Goddammit, I’ll have to accept that according to the school board.

Mr. Ayo

Look, we accept a LOT of extraneous U’s around here. No harm in letting a few E’s in too.

yeah right

“L”s Dammit! You forgot the “L”s!!

yeah right

Dammit! Real answer Anaheim chiles, tomatillos, jalapenos and passila chilies.

yeah right

Mr. Ayo wins by decision.

Enjoy your appointment to the Supreme Court!

Mr. Ayo

Fuck yeah!

Unsurprised

Oh, that’s right. Poblanos are fatter.

Unsurprised

And I’ll call those Anaheim when Hell freezes over.

Unsurprised

Damnation. I used to have a poster of chiles and all four were on it. Now I’m drawing a blank like an idiot. I think it’s green chile, tomatillo, japaneño, poblano

Unsurprised

Oh, I am well aware. I had a shit diet in NM, but green chile never made anything worse.

Unsurprised

Speaking of things that could come back to bite Trump in the ass: the Starr inquisition getting to interrogate Secret Service agents.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Refreshing subject earlier discussed re: post apocalypse.
Alas Babylon by Pat Frank
Astronomical apocalypse: Lucifer’s Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle
Everyone already probably knows this from the Costner movie but it’s a pretty good book although Tom Petty does not do a cameo in the book: The Postman by David Brin.

The first one mentioned I have probably read more than a dozen times over the last 45 years, the second one I haven’t read in decades and am not sure if it has aged well but I liked it enough to read it several times in my youth, and the last one I have only read once but after having seen the film and I remember thinking to myself that it was considerably better than the movie.

yeah right

Lucifer’s Hammer is excellent. Co-sign!

yeah right

Station 11 was part of the Summer reading club at the DFO clubhouse. Great apocalyptic shit.
Crowd favorite.

Of course you’ve read The Last Policeman trilogy, yes?

Viva La Tabula Raza

yes I did, and enjoyed them. I believe it was on your recommendation.

yeah right

Outstanding!

We’ve got the greatest book club ever.

Currently reading Blue Blood by Edward Conlon. A real detective in the NYPD. Lengthy read but it covers his family history, all of the males were cops, and it covers New York Police history. Yeah, the Serpico shit and the police assassinations of the early 70’s. Plus it’s a day-by-day accounting of the process.

In all of it’s agonizing glory

Excellent read but I’ve always been a sucker for cop books.

Ever read any Joseph Wambaugh? Fucking love that shit.

I was practically weaned on it.

Viva La Tabula Raza

I’ve got a diamond cutter for Wambaugh’s stuff. Kinda disappointed he got himself into some skeevy shit a while back, but his Hollywood Station stuff is just as good if not better than the 70s stuff.

Another favorite of mine, most of which are set in Los Angeles, is James Ellroy.

yeah right

I read the 2nd book – book 5? – of the Hollywood Station reinvention shit and it’s fucking old school Wambaugh.

The real shit is great but it’s not that fucking funny but Lines and Shadows was pretty good too.

My mother gave me The Onion Field to read when I was about 14. She was a reader and I’ve been a reader since birth. I’m the youngest of 4 and she knew that I would appreciate it. She never even suggested it to my older brothers.

Then the Choirboys and The Blue Knight.

I guess I’m saying read Blue Blood.

Horatio Cornblower

Not sure if everyone heard that, but the feed I had just had the producer telling Ron Darling what to say, and then him repeating it word-for-word on about a five second delay.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Wasn’t Ron Darling a sportscasting cartoon character who had a strip in the paper that was done by the same guy that did Tank McNamara, Funky Winkerbean, and the one with the curmudgeonly old bus driver Crank (not the Jason Statham Crank)?

theeWeeBabySeamus

You got some crank? I HOPE YOU BROUGHT ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE!!!!!

Viva La Tabula Raza

Unfortunately, it’s never going to get funnier than it is at this very moment in time. It will only continue to get worse, so enjoy it while we’re still alive and not in camps.

Viva La Tabula Raza

I’ve only been to three MLB games in my life, the first at the Astrodome where we had a skybox for a bachelor party, about 1995, with the Killer B’s at the helm. I can’t even remember who they played or who won, we had spent the afternoon before the game down at the dog track on IH 45 on the way to Galveston and were already properly lit by the time we got to the Stro’s game. Next two were for some reason both during the 2011 season. My second game ever attended was at Busch Stadium where they don’t sell Busch Beer (“If you like her mountains, you’ll love her Busch”) where I watched the Phillies blast through the Cards’ entire pitching staff in the 6th inning to turn a 1-1 tie into a 10 or 12 to 1 blowout. Every one left the game and me and my pals went and sat 1st row on the 3rd base line for the last three innings.
Other game was also the Phillies, but at Miller Stadium in Milwaukee, decent seats along 1st base line about 4 rows up provided by a well to do friend of mine, and if I recall the Brewers prevailed on that day. But that’s enough of a connection for me to pull for Brewers, even if it’s just tangentially.

yeah right

Hader’s gonna hate!

Viva La Tabula Raza

This just occurred to me (now on my second scotch and second bowl).

Just got back from a trivia contest where I nearly started a brawl over whether or not Foxboro is part of metropolitan Boston. It’s not, but try telling that to the Masshole running the contest.

We’re coming back next week, and the team name is going to be Foxboro Is Closer To Providence.

Unsurprised

But is it closer than Santa Clara is to SF?

Viva La Tabula Raza

As a native of Mansfield (town directly east of Foxboro), this always pisses me off. They always show shots of the Boston skyline when they come back from commercial break, but Providence is a pretty cool place too, and it’s town center is 22 miles from Foxboro, while Boston’s is 30. There’s a reason that the Patriots plane is parked on the ramp at TF Greene and not at Logan.

Horatio Cornblower

That would have been great to know: “Dude they pahk the fahckin’ plane in Prahvadence, nawt Bahstan!”

Viva La Tabula Raza

I see it every time I fly into Greene, unless they are at an away game.
I’m sure ramp parking fees are a lot lower in Warwick RI than at Logan. Billionaires are usually tightwads.
Hell, they don’t even park it in a hangar.
Now that I think of it, it’s probably a lease.

Horatio Cornblower

“Billionaires are usually tightwads.”

herodotus450

No wonder Parcells never won a game in NE*
*citation needed

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Very disappointed you couldn’t get the brawl started

Horatio Cornblower

To be fair I was wrong about the Phoenix area still having a hockey team. Could’ve sworn Arizona moved there but he was right about Atlanta. Also I thought Papua New Guinea had the most languages* but my team insisted on China, so if I were going to start a brawl** I would have hard to fight them first and I already know my son could drop me like a bad habit.

*Did I mention that question was multiple choice? Seems like I should, as otherwise I would have said India.
**Don’t start brawls at $30 trivia nights kids; it’s just a bad look.

Unsurprised

The Coyotes left? When I visited Glendale, it was just that arena, the Online U stadium site, the interstate, and what seemed like miles of farmland. This is somehow more depressing.

Horatio Cornblower

They didn’t. Cost me a $20 side bet to learn just how much I haven’t been paying attention to hockey since the Whalers moved to Carolina.

Phoenix, however, remains a desert waste land despite having professional teams in all four sports in the greater metropolitan area. Frankly I’d argue that being 9 miles from Phoenix, (as Glendale is), is not the “greater metropolitan area”, but distances in Arizona are different than distances in CT.
comment image

Viva La Tabula Raza

There is single county in west Texas that is larger than the entire state of Connecticut.

Unsurprised

There’s a basically a beltway around the metro area/Maricopa, and the stadium and arena are right inside that. But along the southern highway there was sprawl on both sides, so technically you’re right. It’s all just worthless sprawl.

No, of course you don’t, no one does. That never happens. That’s a dumb question, skip that.

So the IG called an Urgent Meeting with Congress tomorrow, during a recess (which basically isn’t done)…and the scuttlebutt is that Pompeo has been threatening employees at State so they don’t testify.

At least he’s an evangelical-type of crazy, and therefore somewhat more predictable than the current narcissistic psycho/sociopath.

litre_cola

But he is the smartest, probably, in history, I don’t know, someone said that. Smartest in history, not his words. Guy came up to him said “Sir, are you the smartest in history?” I don’t, know, I mean yeah, I mean yes I am. OK.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Actually, it was Albert Einstein that told me I was the smartest. You might have heard of him? Pretty smart fella himself, to be sure, came up with that Theory of Lust for Relatives. Yeah, he told me that, back during an earlier marriage; wife at the time was, uh, oh, yeah, Victoria Principal!

Unsurprised

Didn’t Trump try to throw him under the bus by implicating him in this Ukraine shit? It seems totally possible for him to have gotten involved because he thought he was the adult in the room and not, you know, a traitorous piece of shit.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

He did, and there’s probably a dozen other things that Trump roped Pence into so that he’d have some leverage to drag him down with him in situations like this. If it actually plays out the way I hope and dream it does, I’d expect someone pretty well-removed from Trump’s orbit to take over – a Gerald Ford equivalent. Mitt Romney is who comes to mind for me.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Wow, a double impeachment. President Pelosi!

Unsurprised

Fuck

King Hippo

if it ever got far enough along that the Senate was WILLING to convict, there would be some sort of staggered resignation deal to a caretaker government each party would sign off on.

NOTE – 99.999999% Senate will never convict, it’s more about grinding their shit to a halt and into the sunlight. Make the whole party OWN this shitburger.

herodotus450

“Oh sweet, we tried to blackmail some commies? If I wasn’t under house arrest I’d actually vote in the next election for trump”

Unsurprised

Yeah, that’s the thing. This all rests on the majority of the country somehow getting off its ass and giving a shit for once.

King Hippo

public opinion has moved, and significantly so. Question is how much farther it can move.

Unsurprised

There’s no one at permanent at Defense, Mnuchin should be in prison already (Thanks, Kamala!), Barr, no one at DHS (also, fuck DHS), so I guess whatever big ag lobbyist is at Agriculture? It’s not going to be Ross, who is behind this whole trade war with China and tried to poison the fucking census.

King Hippo

no, like they convict Trump, to AVOID a Pelosi, they allow Pence to nominate a VP that would be a caretaker (a Chuck Hagel or Lee Hamilton type) then allow Pence to resign.

Again, this is just like a 0.00001% likelihood, the GOP Senate won’t put themselves in the crosshairs of Trump’s “New civil War!!!111” yahoos, no matter what. But they will wear the hair shirt.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I wonder if Pompeo was dumb enough to do it in writing.

Unsurprised

Of course. You can’t spell “Witness Tampering Dope” without POMPEO.

King Hippo

He seems pretty dim. One of those Christian Dominionists, so it checks out.

Horatio Cornblower

Guy’s got a West Point degree. He’s not dumb. He may be corrupt, evil, willing to do anything to advance his career no matter the cost to the country, and obese, but he is not dumb.

Dunstan

It’s not about being dumb. It’s about being arrogant.

The three Dem chairs just wrote to Pompeo’s deputy, pointing out (1) Pompeo’s got a conflict here and has to recuse; (2) Pompeo’s letter refusing to allow employees to appear for deposition is bullshit; and (3) that it’s a criminal offense to interfere with a committee investigation.

Your move, Pompeo.

Checking out the newest season of American Horror Story about nuclear apocalypse. Great opening followed immediately by goofy shit. I don’t think there’s ever been a show that takes an interesting concept and races to wackiness the way AHS does.

King Hippo

crap, I’d love a well-made nuclear apocalypse show/series

Gratliff

AHS has always had like a 70-30 watchable to embarrassing ratio. Asylum was 100% good except for the alien bits which were just fucking awful, dragging it back to the mean.

King Hippo

yeah, that’s a general problem with genres of sci-fi/alternative history that I almost really like. There will be spaceships or some other weird shit that throws off the narrative.

King Hippo

A Canticle For Liebowitz was almost perfect, though.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Not nuclear-caused, but one of my favorite post-ap books ever was/is Earth Abides by George R. Stewart. I read somewhere once that this was also one of Jimi Hendrix’s favorite books.

King Hippo

will look that up. ANYTHING apocalypse tends to cheer me up.

Viva La Tabula Raza

It was written way back in 1949. I have been reading it on average every 6 or 7 years since the first time I dragged it home from the base library at a place called Karamursel in Turkey in about 1971.

King Hippo

ordered both books just now, mercy buckets!

Viva La Tabula Raza

I look forward to hearing your opinion. Just keep in mind that the Warday book was written at the height of the Reagantime, when it seemed pretty much in the realm of possibility.
comment image

King Hippo

oh yes, I lived through that time (born 1973). On my OPTIMISTIC days, I reckoned we had a 50/50 shot at avoid nuclear catasrophe

Viva La Tabula Raza

I was on a warship in the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and North Arabian Sea from 1982-1985. The technology wasn’t available for us to keep a real tab on things, and the US Navy wasn’t all that eager to enlighten we enlisted second class citizens, so I missed out on a lot of current events that did not directly affect fleet activities during that time frame. (for instance, we all knew about the Rooskies shooting down that Korean airliner, because initially we were going to have to go up to the Sea of Japan to support some aircraft carrier that was headed there, and that would have fucked us out of a liberty call in Phuket Thailand. And we know about Grenada, and the Marine barracks in Lebanon getting bombed. But not much about what was going on in DC.)

WhyEaglesWhy

I just looked up A Canticle For Liebowitz, as I hadn’t heard of it, and now it’s next on my list!

Viva La Tabula Raza

Skip the posthumously released sequel. The original is magnificent though.

Viva La Tabula Raza

If things continue on their current trajectory, you (and everyone else on the planet) may very well end up as involuntary cast members in a post-apocalyptic reality show. Hope you like it!

King Hippo

I have long said that Wake County should market itself as a “no slow death” zone. All the high-tech here, plus military bases in the state, plus I like like 8 miles from a very large nuclear power plant. I’ll be incinerated before I even have time to shit my pants.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Book called Warday by Whitley Strieber and James Kunetka, written as if by two journalists trekking across the country some time after a limited nuclear exchange, described the incineration of San Antonio with it’s 4 AF bases, one army base, and two nuclear & chemical weapons storage facilities, with some frightening accuracy (Strieber grew up in Alamo Heights when he wasn’t getting abducted by aliens).
There are 1-1/2 less Air Force bases here since BRAC, but I’m pretty sure that SA remains pretty high on the targets of interest list of China and Russia. I now live 25 miles north of the city, which probably means slow death if the targeting telemetry works for them commies/ex-commies. I can only hope that it happens during the day when I’m at work down at Lackland AFB.

WhyEaglesWhy

I had a bit of a nuclear apocalypse obsession as a teenager and I LOVED that book.

Viva La Tabula Raza

His descriptions of the shadows of the nuclear-obliterated B-52s sitting on the ramp at Kelly AFB still resonate with me, since where I work I sit less than a quarter mile from where they used to park those planes.

WhyEaglesWhy

For me it was the perfect mirror-like smoothness of the bomb craters in San Antonio. Also, the relative normalcy of California.

Not sports related, but was pleasantly shocked to see justice done in that trial of the Dallas cop that shot that black guy in his own apartment. IN TEXAS, no less. But probably will get turned over on appeal, because Texas.
Also, it’s hard to believe that it’s been over 70 years since Sgt Pepper taught the band to play, over 50 years since the Beatles released their album, and around 43 years since I bought my 8-track recording of that album. Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.

Horatio Cornblower

It’s probably appeal-proof. From what I read, (a smidge, which is a legal term meaning “not a lot”), the judge gave the defense nearly everything they asked for, including a charge on the ‘Castle defense’, which allows you to shoot someone coming into your house, (which is odd, since the cop was in someone else’s house), which gives the defense very little to cry about.

No, the real atrocity will be when the cop convicted of murder gets the 5-year minimum.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Well, she cleaned up pretty well for court compared to the mugshot, so at least we can bask in the thought of her getting strap-on-ed for 5 years by some tattooed crew-cut 275 pound bull dagger.
Or maybe she’ll dig it.
