Can you believe that all three hosts made it to the Round of 16? That’s amazing! Let’s look at each one:
MÉXICO
The Mexicans beat Ecuador in what was probably their best performance in a World Cup ever. Seriously, it was an impressive display. And Ecuador was no slouch.
They will host England at the Azteca tomorrow night. Expectations are tempered at the Balls household. I would love for them to play well. I would hate for the game to be decided by penalties. If they end up somehow going through to the next game, I will be worried about all the fireworks that will go off around the LA area.
CANADÁ
Les Canadiens beat South Africa 1-0 in the US of A since they finished 2nd in the group. It was a good win in regulation that made history. It was their first ever win in their first ever knockout game.
This morning in Houston, they faced Morocco for the second time in a World Cup. They lost the first time in Qatar 2-1. Today, they lost 3-0. I blame Ayo and Spam for picking Morocco while the rest of us did our duty as good Americans and forgot to put picks in.
US of A
The Yanks scored one goal against Bosnia and 1 against Herzegovina and moved on to face Belgium in the Round of 16. It didn’t come without a price as Folarin Balogun received a red card late in the second half and will miss the Belgium game. He has been arguably the team’s best player.
That red card, however, overshadowed the great performance the US team had. Even down to 10 men, they still managed to score their second goal. I would not count them out against Belgium, who barely squeaked by Sénégal.
OTHER MUNDIAL STUFF
Argentina is going to win it all. I’m sorry, but I do not see any other outcome. They have an easier path to the final than anyone and they’re hitting on all cylinders. If they don’t win it all, it will be a major shocker.
The consequences of earlier-than-expected eliminations are starting to roll in. To date:
- Germany has fired their coach and have a tentative agreement to bring in Jürgen Klopp
- Uruguay’s coach will not be invited back as his contract expired after their elimination.
- Ecuador’s coach has resigned after the elimination by México
- The Netherlands’ coach has resigned after extending their record unbeaten streak at the World Cup but getting eliminated in penalities
- South Korea’s coach not only resigned but made a public apology to the Korean people
- Scotland’s coach resigned and will stay in Boston to drink Sam Adams the rest of his days (the latter part may be made up)
This afternoon’s game:
FRANCE V PARAGUAY at the Eagles’ Stadium
The last time these two teams met each other in a World Cup, Paraguay almost eliminated the French. They went into extra time in the Round of 16 and a French Golden Goal in the 113th minute pushed them through. France ended up winning their first World Cup that year.

COMMENT AWAY!
On a secondary note, Happy 4th of July to everyone. I’m celebrating by having pancakes for breakfast, Red White And Blue Monster for lunch, and hot dogs for dinner. Like a proud American.
