Finally, unrelated to football, it’s been a bad day for music fans. The 58 people killed at the Jason Aldean show in Las Vegas by a domestic terrorist, and news that Tom Petty is on life-support dead, have made for a very sad Monday.
I saw Tom Petty live once. It was the “True Confessions” tour with Bob Dylan in 1986.
It was pretty good. Each played 45 minutes on their own, and then combined for the final 30 minutes of the show. I owned that shirt for years; it eventually wore out.
Game Preview: Chiefs at [*Redacted] s
Tonight, two of the sports world’s finest ethnic slurs face off in Washington as the Kansas City Chiefs, owned by non-affiliated Christian & white male Clark Hunt, take on a Washington team owned by Jewish businessman & white male Dan Snyder.
Hunt, who lettered in soccer at Southern Methodist University in 1987, and therefore did not have any hand in the alleged murder of five hookers while Craig James definitely attended SMU between 1979-82, majored in business, worked at Goldman Sachs and was named head of Hunt Sports Group LLC when his father Lamar died. He shares ownership with his three siblings. He was influential in getting his father to back the creation of Major League Soccer, something that validated the league in its early days of operation.
Dan Snyder, a petty little man who has a tendency to sue any organization that writes untruthful things, is a businessman notorious for attempting to squeeze every penny out of the organizations he owns or belongs to as well as monetizing the fan base. I refer you to Dave McKenna’s piece from the Washington City Paper for more details. Snyder attempted to sue the paper & author for defamation, but the suit was withdrawn in the face of a SLAPP motion by the defendants. Currently surrounded by yes-men, he presides over a team that hasn’t done anything meaningful in the NFL since Joe Gibbs first discovered car racing.
The game itself should be a spirited affair, as Kansas City are the only remaining unbeaten team and Washington wants to keep pace with the Eagles & stay one game ahead of the Cowboys. Alex Smith is doing a commendable job holding back the tide wanting high draft pick Patrick Mahomes to come in & take the reins. Now that they have settled on a pronunciation, Washington is enjoying another Kirk Cousins franchise-tag year, as their recent devastation of the Raiders proved. They both have solid receiving corps, and while Washington has the advantage in the safety/corner department, they won’t be able to do much without being able to stop KC’s Kareem Hunt, who is the prime reason Alex Smith looks as good as he does.
It’s either going to be a 42-38 barnburner or a 7-6 slog. Gun to my head, I’d take the Chiefs.

Anyway, Patriots fans are actually good.
YOU MONSTER!
If I wasn’t so sick of seeing Raiders fans turning on the team, I’d check out the Patriots blog to see what kind of meltdown those guys are going through.
I’ve been browsing the comments section of the Big Blue View and Blogging the Boys and other alliterative NFC East blogs. It’s been fun.
You went too far.
Kind of neat to see Ron Swanson’s impression of Dean Spanos.
Don’t worry I’m going to defend the Unabomber in the next hour, if I could just shave this beard and leave this shed.

Goddamn it I got out the whiskey.
This just in: Chiefs opponent makes key mistake in critical late-game situation!

Speaking of religion…
I have no problem with people believing in a higher power, but there is no way I’ll ever follow someone who claims to have it all figured out. We as a species are arrogant enough to think we know everything, but too fucking stupid to realize that would don’t know dick, so we make shit up.
That’s why I’ll never be part of an organized religion. That and football is on Sundays, and I can’t do the Judaism thing because bacon.
To be fair, you’re in the land of stadium churches and televangelists.
I’m Catholic and my local priest doesn’t claim to know everything or have everything figured out. I’ve found that the religion is only as good as the local person that espouses its teachings.
I’m fine with that. My wife is actively Catholic and her priest is an excellent man that also struggles with what I just posted. I fully respect my wife’s beliefs as I do anyone’s, I just have a problem when someone claims to understand God, like the mega-churches you mentioned.
Please don’t take my post as a disrespect for your beliefs and I apologize if that’s how it came out.
POPE FRANCIS WILL BE MILDLY DISAPPOINTED AND THEN JUST DO HIS THING
Nah, we’re cool. Moose is the one that thinks I’m crazy for finding something good in religion.
That doesn’t distort what I have said at all.
Of course that is what de papists do ;]
To be fair, you’re in the land of stadium churches and televangelists.
True that; the US is one of the few rich countries that is highly religious.
What I never really understood, despite being raised Catholic, is the notion of an all powerful, all knowing being that we could connect with on any sort of level.
So I am all powerful and all knowing. I know everything that can and will ever happen. How do I not go batshit insane instantaneously? I exist nonstop. No matter what I do, I know the results immediately before I do anything.
And can god make a burrito so big even he/she can’t eat it?

This was one of my favorite Simpsons episodes ever.
http://babysimpson.co.uk/gallery/frames/4/9f01/397.jpg
Yep. Especially when it flies in the face of evidence of near infinite dimensions.
Evidence doesn’t have shit to do with teaching people to love one another, which is the core tenet of most of the big religions.
I ain’t going to argue other than to say maybe you should revisit core tenets and those tenets put into practice. On second thought; if you are this old and still have that idea; just keep truckin’.
Like I said before, religion is only as good as the local person. If you’re going by the Vatican’s decisions or by abuse scandals, then you’ll never find any good in religion. But there is more to it than that. If you don’t want to see it, keep on trucking.
I never said religion can’t have good principles or that some of those practicing it cannot do good things; that’s what you put there. One doesn’t need religion to be good and moral, and on the organizational level, in practice throughout history the edge goes heavily to tribalistic, imperialistic, and destructive. If you are happy and secure in your beliefs that doesn’t really matter.
Practice is always different from theory in everything, not just religion. Assholes distort good things and make them bad.
Like there’s nothing better to do.
Distorted Assholes is good for both a FF team and a metal band name!
and that is prolly why we shouldn’t talk religion, which is my policy with several family members.

I’m also not really religious, and I don’t really believe in God. But, I also think those new Atheism people are complete assholes who I don’t want to share any views with. How do I reconcile those two views?
Do PCP and comment here.
I already do that, but I just keep getting yelled at by my Dog and my Refrigerator.
Your dog seems alright, the fridge may be a Decepticon.
DOG IS GOD BACKWARDS BRO
That’s why my Dog recited the Shema before she went to sleep!!
Be a normal atheist like the vast majority.
Yeah, but so many atheists that I’ve run into are the types who quote Hitchens, Dawkins, and Harris unironically.
I mean Brian Dawkins did have some quotables.
Well, the others usually don’t bring it up unless asked. Quotes are the oppposite of an in-depth analysis or conversation.
Become a Mormon
It’s funny. When things are less insane, I get more into the atheism community shit. Then the Ferguson shit fired up and I learned a whole bunch of atheists are actually comically racist. It was rather disappointing. There was one popular atheist account on Twitter I followed that actually asked the community why they can be skeptical of god, but not of black people being naturally predisposed to criminal behavior.
The alt-right is not religious in the least from what I have seen.
In some cases, it was like years of literally nothing but talking about religion and philosophy and then BOOM Looney Tunes-era Jungle African caricatures. It was like someone pressed a button and set off a bunch of racist Manchurian zombies.
Maybe somewhat less than the KKK, but most believe they are essentially god’s children and others are the inferior mud people.
Now I have to see this guy’s twitter.
Thinking it was godless spellchecker, but I don’t want to be wrong and end up smearing the poor guy. It’s been a while.
Didn’t see anything about Black people. However, he does seem really concerned about Islam.
There were quite a few unfollows around that time for varying levels of bullshit, so it’s hard to remember who said what about what minority and in what ways they were a danger to good white women.
There are plenty of racist of all ilks, but it is or should be more likely that a religiously skeptical person will be more inclined to accept scientific evidence and concepts. In particular genetics, which proves we are all brothers and sisters and the concept of race is without merit; it describes regional adaptations to climate and population isolation.
Overthrowing a shovel pass is Alex Smith’s version of displaying arm strength.

you could defeat him, if only you ran a TRUE Marxist to give a real contrast ,, smgdh
/sad thing is, Dems have the perfect candidate, a very honorable guy who tried the Birmingham church bombers, will be a miracle to hit 45% against this nut
Honestly, a state like Alabama is the perfect place to try a far left candidate to see what happens. Just go full-on socialist and see how it affects turnout.
But I do think the candidate they chose is good.
I’m just impressed that they found the one piece of shit in that state worse than Sessions.
I’m not as liberal as many of you, but even I think this guy needs to fall off a cliff.
He’s just vile.
There’s a wood chipper at the bottom of that cliff, right?
Surrounded by a river of Crocodiles, Temple of Doom style.
Too merciful.
He catches fire before being s-l-o-w-l-y ground in a rusty wood chipper?
Wood chipper dippin’?
The funny thing is, he looks exactly like the type of guy who would be peddling these bullshit views around.

Looking at the play chart on the sideline, Andy Reid looks like he’s looking at a menu with the pictures on it.

So I thought that Washington was going to blow this game with stupid turnovers, but it looks like they are going with stupid penalties instead.

Just a reminder that, while the present is difficult, if we all just come together and hang in there then, statistically, we are headed towards a reality where about every 3 months or so we’ll be able to have a party on the fresh grave of one of these bastards. Robertson, O’Reilly, Hannity, Trump, InfoWars — it’s gonna be grand. Buddy went to a panel discussion at Rutgers tonight entitled, “Identity politics: the new racialism on campus?” It was very good, a few people tried to shout it down or heckle but it was pretty subdued.
My biggest takeaway was that if the audience tonight is a microcosm of the left, the Democratic Party is going to keep losing elections en masse across the country. There were a couple Black Lives Matter protesters (a cause I am sympathetic to) and instead of coherent points it just devolved into “DISMANTLE THE SYSTEM! IMPERIALISM etc”. The white liberal guy gave a really good talk about how if you’re not in political power, your movements aren’t going to do a fucking thing. He kept saying to people, “Okay all those stats are true, how are you going to change or dismantle the system? I want to win elections, how are you going to get this enacted if you don’t win elections?”
YUP
Did white liberal guy have an answer for that or is he just doing what so many liberals do and chide the left for not having power while simultaneously making it difficult for the left to gain it?
Vote. Get active. Twitter doesn’t win elections or really do a damned thing in the long run. Have plans that go beyond Step 1.
He’s a crotchety old guy so he had no qualms getting louder than the people shouting.
That’s about what I expected.
By the way, the organizing is happening on the left but it’s hard to much when the major party that claims to speak for you seem to love kneecapping popular movements whenever they can (see Tom Perez over Keith Ellison) and then lecturing the insurgents afterwards.
I don’t know if this guy is a Democrat or not, but I suspect he is because having a coherent vision for making people’s lives better matters *a lot* it was something sorely lacking in 2016 from a party that seemed to think it would win by default. Labour shocked everyone simply by putting out a manifesto of ideas and saying that they’ll do that if elected. It did wonders for turnout and even without a majority, Labour is a force people respect (and on the right, fear).
I still think putting Corbyn at the head is political suicide.
I heard that all summer along with projections the Tories would crush him.
Well, the Tories had a political suicide move up their sleeve in the snap election.
and hard, purist left is just something that has never, ever worked in the United States. The Dems have ALWAYS been a coalition party, even during the New Deal. Progressive progress has always come from channeling the power of that coalition, and has required someone who knows how to navigate it (FDR, LBJ).
I think coalition building is a strength, not a weakness. I don’t buy the notion of “purges” and such.
Until the manifesto was released, they were going to roll in the election. Once that came out, approval for Corbyn and Labour shot up (Corbyn was incredibly unpopular this spring). The Tories countered with their own manifesto but because they have mostly awful ideas, it blew up in their face. (Hello “dementia tax!”)
Anyway, May is awful and a terrible leader and their campaign manger (who managed Obama’s reelection in 2012!) was equally terrible.
I agree. People (particularly millennials and people of color) need something that galvanizes them to get out there and vote. It certainly wasn’t Hillary this past election, and the way the Democrats are approaching things so far, it looks like they’re not going to endorse a candidate that’s going to do that in 2020. But, anything can happen between now and then.
Kamala Harris is eyeing the nomination eagerly and saying the things the left wants to hear. Will she making that into a campaign? I don’t know. Democrats are far too in love with political figures and not political ideas so I don’t trust any of them to follow through.
But that’s the system we have. It requires a good politician as much as the ideas they represent. That was, irony of ironies, the HillyBob problem. Nothing at all wrong with her ideas.
Eh. I think her foreign policy was quite wrong and unpopular, but that’s another tangent.
Well, we have some great FP now.
Disagree on her ideas. She was and is a war hawk.
About the only time she ever showed passion discussing an issue was when she emphatically told people Single Payer would never, ever happen.
It’s why her campaign was so happy to run against Trump. They thought it would mean they could avoid campaigning on ideas altogether and they loved that.
Being a woman she had to appear so or be labeled “weak on FP”, we were already in two, it would not have gotten worse, even though status quo is terrible.
Kamala Harris loved defending dirty prosecutors in California. She’s fucking awful.
And was against body cams on police.
Being pragmatic in one place can kill you in another.
This country elected Trump; those people will not be convinced of anything logical. There might be some areas to gain a simple majority, but even if the best campaign is run with facts, logic, and ethics nothing substantive will change. And I looking at the positive.
I think more people are undecided than you let on. I believe 50 counties that went from Obama twice switched to Trump this past election. And Trump got a lot more of the Hispanic vote that Romney did.
Hillary was just a fucking awful candidate, so much leftists even abstained from voting Democrat.
Democrats are incapable of admitting the the Obama-Trump voters numbered in the millions because it would imply they lost those voters as opposed to them being unwinnable in the first place. It’s a indictment of their failure to offer a vision and, frankly, I don’t think the party realizes the West Wing is not real life and they need to stop modeling their political actions on it.
Sorry, but if they were persuaded to vote for Trump, they cannot be counted on for anything. Even if more progressive democrats win some seats there will be enough red to block anything substantive, in the next several elections. After that it will be too late.
I refuse to believe one or even two-time Obama voters can not be counted on to vote Democrat again.
If they voted for Trump; I doubt it, if they abstained, it is a possibility. If one voted for Trump there are serious underlying problems. I don’t really think there are many of these. It will be who gets their non-voters the most motivated. The democrats can’t win local or mid-term so it will not matter.
By kneeling during the national anthem, duh.
Reminds me of a conversation I had with a Bernie Bro once. Blech
The concept of middle ground is dead in American politics. “I’m right and you’re wrong” is far more critical to most people than “How can we make this work?”
it’s kind of gotten forgotten amidst the racism, but Obama did capture the middle.
Obama was an absolute unicorn. God, how I miss that man.
/knows he not ded
what I want more than anything in a politician is a pragmatist.
Black children routinely get murdered by police for walking in public.
Any outcry against that…no matter how peaceful, gets labeled as violent.
Its really hard to listen to white people telling me that i need to keep buying into a system that targets me for incarceration and murder by cop.
I will be honest, my view of the police has been dim for a while now, even way before Ferguson.
I don’t like interacting with them (for a variety of reasons, mental illness among them), and if I am pulled over even for a minute traffic stop, I will surreptitiously record them because (I’m allowed to in this state) I’ve read about enough police misconduct on all races to realize I am not exempt and that I really, really need to think twice before calling the cops for anything given how simple anxiety can be misread as, “Hey, are you hiding something?”
The shooting of Charles Kinsey really cemented my views because in addition to being a preventable shooting, the North Miami PD came out and said, “Oh it’s cool, we weren’t aiming for the black guy, but the non-verbal autistic man sitting five feet from him.”
You want to fuck your son for life…name him “Jamal” or any other name that people think is black and he will never get an application through for a job.
