I managed to get this piece of shit DC drive working. Its been at our labs for something like 12 years. Usually we run one drive and one motor. I got it working two motors, but I am doing the sleazy, cheap ass shit where I daisy chained the motors in parallel. I need to figure out a fucking way to get the drive to control both motor’s armatures together, but run the fields on the motors separately. I need this to simulate a large application, like on a steel mill, like this…

This is usually how its done on large projects. We got customers coming in that frankly, I’ve been tasked with stealing them from a competitor. Its an aluminum mill up in Canada. Their main mill stand is this massive beast that was put in 20 years ago. Our competitor can’t get them parts and keeps blowing off giving them training.
So I am tasked with figuring out their existing system, simulating the thing as best as possible, explaining how their shit works, in hopes it drums up business because their shit is ancient.
What is difficult is I have a relatively tiny drive (140 amps). But that’s fucking huge compared to what I have in the way of power. I am basically trying to run a drive that usually runs at least a 55 hp motor…I have fucking two 5 hp motors. I got at best 460VAC…when I am suppose to be running on a lot more power.
Oh and again, this is a piece of shit 12 year old drive that never worked up until about 40 hours ago. If I blow anything up, I am royally fucked as I would have to order parts from Italy. I also got to basically dissect their automation code and HMI, get it to work on the random equipment I have in my lab, and modify it to work on my shit motors.
What is killing me also is that I have AC motors I can attach to my DC motor, with AC drives so I can simulate a load…BUT…I can’t do more than 2% dynamic breaking without risking blowing up my converter on my AC drives. I also pop breakers in the office if I fuck with the power grid too much. So pretty much I need to simulate closely how their big equipment works under heavy loading, do complex shit like load sharing, simulated line breaks, torque control, speed control, etc…but with no direct way to do it.
I got to the 30th to potentially pull this off. I could potentially bring in six figures if we land an upgrade, which for our struggling metals business. Or I could royally fuck this up, have the customer show up, and all I got is smoked equipment.
I got to get fucking creative…
