Subsequent GTD reflections

Welcome back to the comments of the week. Another week of the site being slow and troublesome to log into and post. Thanks for sticking with us as we go through some moving pains. I’ve been told that the site has been moved providers way behind the scenes and that things are slowing being worked on to get them back to what we’re used to. Hats of to DTZM for getting this done with the site. Someone should buy him a drink or three.

At the home front, it is officially March April break this week, so the kids are off.  Think they need the break.  Also the provincial government has finally come to their senses and schooling here will be virtual for the next while.  I get that is suuuuucks out loud for the kids not to have all the social stuff that it brings, but with the spreading of the Covids in the schools and our general lack of vaccines and that kids under 16 can’t get it, yet, anyway it just makes sense to keep them at home.  For all those parents with young kids, kudos to you for keeping them busy and being able to work too.

As a reminder, this post will cover comments made up to and through the Saturday Night Open Thread. Sunday comments stand alone and Monday comments will go on the next week’s post.

Without further ado, here are the comments of the week.

Me when I first moved to L.A.: “Holy shit, it’s an earthquake!”

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m hoping the Jets trade down and get a stud DB. Give Darnold a shot with (what I think is going to be) a MUCH better HC. Let Saleh build a ferocious defense to lessen his burden, and if, in a couple more years, he can’t turn it around, cut bait. That way if we DO need a new QB, he can be a game-manager with shut down D for his first couple of years. Hell, Buffalo is going to rule this division for the foreseeable future. Grow something good in the meantime.

Who am I kidding? It’s the Jets. They’ll fuck everything up. And I’m a Jets fan, so this comment probably won’t even post.

I will say it again. This is the most interesting series [Scammer series] of all.

For me it’s the mock drafts; painstakingly handcrafted over a period of time sometime exceeding four minutes each one is truly a masterpiece.

Golf is boring enough, and now they are making it even worse by delaying for storms and eliminating the prospect of seeing someone on the course get hit by lightning and lit up like a Christmas tree? What the fuck, Augusta?

Checking out some microbreweries’ web sites, and it always cracks me up that they ask “are you 21 years of age?” (I’m sure it’s some dumb regulatory requirement, not something they do voluntarily.) Yes, that’ll baffle all of the underage drinkers who are seeking out the latest double IPA or whatever…

So I am dropping off Decilitre at Tumbling, there is a microbrewery right behind. You are supposed to stay in your car in case needed. But……. I mean i am still close right???

My brother and cousin decided to come stay with me this weekend AFTER understanding my wife is out of town. They just took off to the strip. I’m thinking they didn’t appreciate the VEGAS!!!!! limitations on a father of a two year old flying solo for a few days.

I’m glad to have my night to myself actually.

Tater Tots saved my life several times. Go on? Sure. There was a two years-long period of time when I was going to school full time, working as a bartender full time and drinking full time. I went to school Monday-Thursday, did a night shift Thursday and double shifts Friday, Saturday and Sunday. After each of those shifts a gang of us would shut the bar down and the drinking would begin. Tons of deep-fried Tater Tots and gallons of coffee the next morning gave us the energy to work the following day.

/I’m not exactly sure how I made it thru that period alive

I try not to judge a baseball team’s prospects before Memorial Day, but good lord do the Yanks look like crap early on. They don’t hit, they can’t field, they have one good starting pitcher, and the bullpen is going to be on the DL by the end of the month at this rate.

Other than that, sky’s the limit.

scotchnaut

Shoutout to all the high-profile mock-drafters that said the Giants needed to draft a #1 wideout with the eleventh pick and are still sticking to their dumb/hopeless/pathetic guns after the Golladay signing.

scotchnaut

[ears are burning white-hot]

-Mel Kiper

Dunstan

Doesn’t Kiper just issue 20 different “mock drafts” so that afterwards he can claim that he predicted everything?

Horatio Cornblower

Yes. He’s the worst.

Horatio Cornblower

/Gettleman drafts the 6th best wideout at 11.

scotchnaut

So silly. He’ll draft a “Hog Molly” and insist he play tight end. Get your faux conjectures straight!

Horatio Cornblower

I currently having him taking the monster LB out of Penn State, but that would make sense, so I’m likely wrong.

scotchnaut

I pointed it out in another thread-the Giants haven’t grabbed an lb in the 1st round since 1984-best go with Slater, imo.

Horatio Cornblower

And look how that bum worked out.

Horatio Cornblower

But you’re right, as I get ready for my 2nd, and final, (glares at Kiper), mock I am increasingly unlikely to stay with Parsons going to NY

Reading “Bangkok Haunts” (3rd in the series) right now and it is a fantastic read. Don’t be a dummy like me-start at “Bangkok 8” and go from there. Can’t rec enough if you like the “Compromised half-Thai, half-American Sorta Farang Detective” subgenre.

Horatio Cornblower

What I haven’t read Bangkok 1-7?

Dunstan

I’ve found that with just one night in Bangkok, and the world’s your oyster.

Gumbygirl

You can’t be too careful with your company.

Brick Meathook

I’m a big fan of the “Bangkok Lady-Boy Detective” series.

scotchnaut

Let’s file this under, “Least Surprising Brick Comment Ever”.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

So the music program I use (MusicBee) groups songs by track number if no other information is available from the mp3 file, so you’ll get a “album” consisting of all songs with the track number 4, or 9, or 13. Right now I’m on 13, and I just encountered the following sequence:

Masochism World – Husker Du
Miss Teen Wordpower – New Pornographers
Pitter Patter Goes My Heart – Broken Social Scene
Polar Opposites – Modest Mouse
Purple Rain – Prince

Good fucking shit.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

The line “I’m trying to drink away the part of the day that I cannot sleep away” from Polar Opposites is one of my all-time favorite lyrics.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Followed by:

Queen of Cans and Jars – Guided by Voices
Reverence – The Jesus and Mary Chain

Who says 13 is unlucky?

SonOfSpam

13 tracks on Purple Rain?

Must be the extended version (that’s what she said)

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Oh. I just realized what will be the anchor track for the Ultimate Minnesota Vikings mixtape.

Gumbygirl

With a baseball bat. Oh yeah.

Dunstan

I realize I’m treading into the territory of spouting off about public health issues I’m not qualified to address, but this J&J “pause” seems insane to me. Especially phrasing it as an “abundance of caution” — this seems to pretend that it’s risk vs. expense/inconvenience/whatever, when you really have to balance different risks (6 blood clots in ~ 7 million doses vs. additional COVID cases from slowing rate of vaccination + aggravating vaccine reluctance).

Dunstan

In the years to come, I suspect there’s going to be a huge reckoning over failures in public health. A certain amount of error is understandable when dealing with a new disease, but things like the delays in recognizing aerosols as the main vector, the decision to tell people not to wear even cloth masks because we’re worried about shortages of N95s for medical professionals, and the seemingly-panicky flip-flopping over the AZ vaccine in Europe and now J&J here strike me as unforced errors. And mostly in the realm of not understanding human psychology and public reaction, not in scientific analysis.

Unfortunately, all of the dumb and bad faith criticisms of the CDC and FDA by Trump and the “die for the Dow Jones”/”it’s a Chinese hoax”/”masks are an imposition on my precious freedom” crowd have acted to discredit any criticism. I know I’ve said things like “trust the experts,” which is an overstatement.

Brick Meathook

I just got the J&J vaccine on Saturday and I’ve only had a few blood clots. This panic is way overblown.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

> I’ve only had a few blood clots…

[looks down at Bucket o’ Clots]

You gotta buy in bulk, man, it’s more economical that way.

SonOfSpam

The clots aren’t even that big, at least not the ones that came out while I was peeing.

Dunstan

They also can’t affect you if you sign the national anthem loudly. The NFL has taught us that Clots always lose to Patriots.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

“Sign it loudly?”

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I hate to be such a company man, but I think a pause is the correct course of action. Take a couple of days to get information out to providers on how to spot/treat these issues, maintain transparency, and then get back to the ol’ jabby jab.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

There’s enough of a problem with vaccine hesitancy already – just imagine what would happen if they *didn’t* publicize this potential issue and just plowed ahead. It’d be heaven for the conspiracy folks.

Dunstan

That’s a fair point, but I suspect that both hard-core conspiracy folks (who are unreachable anyway) and the “concerned but persuadable” folks will end up with the idea that “yes, there is a big problem, the government had to admit it, but then Biden/Big Pharma/whoever bullied them into letting it slide.

I just think that the kind of people who will conclude that the CDC acted responsibly in recommending the pause and then acted responsibly in lifting that recommendation are also the kind of people who would not have been alarmed if the CDC had “just plowed ahead.” I mean, since the start of vaccinations there has been a steady flow of vaccine scare stories based on isolated cases, and the people who are inclined to be scared by those are scared by them, and the people who aren’t so inclined figure it must not be that big an issue.

But I’m just speculating from my own views of human nature.

Horatio Cornblower

They’re doing it because of the product liability lawyers, damn their oily hides.

Dunstan

Oh, the bit about alerting health care providers I have no issue with. Apparently the standard treatment for blood clots doesn’t work on, and even aggravates, this particular type. So educating hospitals to ask patients about their vaccine history and treat accordingly makes sense to me.

It’s only the “and we should pause on further vaccinations” part that I question.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I suppose I’d have a different opinion if I had a vaccine appointment today that got canceled because of the policy. Ideally in two or three days one of the White House dogs will chew up a pair of shoes belonging to the ambassador from Sri Lanka or something and we’ll forget there was ever even an issue with the vaccine.

TheRevanchist

I agree.

Part of the problem is that J&J has had bad press lately regarding their vaccine, and public perception sometimes takes over. They had a bad batch they had to recall. The J&J effectivity rate. One dumb paper ran an article on how a person got the J&J vaccine 2 weeks ago and now has COVID.

I’ve been trying to convince some people to get the vaccine and they don’t want to get a shot twice, if they choose to do it. And, they have been skeptical of any vaccines. This isn’t helping me. It’s been a topic of conversation in the office, and how do I convince my staff to get it when they hear all the bad?

Ugh.

Horatio Cornblower

“Get the shot or you’re fired; this isn’t a democracy.”

blaxabbath

Just tell ’em you can get vaccinated workers for cheaper. Then go higher vaccinated workers for cheaper.

Let ’em know you mean business.

Perhaps more Instagram posts is the answer?

According to all the unsolicited stories I get to see (IG: “So you like Jalen Ramsey? Perhaps you’d like this dime-a-dozen-perfect-10 to talk about her wild real estate earnings that come NO MONEY DOWN!!”), you need to put your humility on blast.

I like to envision Sammy reading this comment and being like, “Finally! Someone who gets how this franchise is being built with –“

And then the ESPN chyron is like, “Sam Dernoold traded to Carolina for a jar of food bank peanut butter”.
